"كانت فيينا مدينة التماثيل، إذ أن عددها يماثل عدد المارة في الشوارع، وانتصبت على قمم أعلى الأبراج، وجثمت على حجارة القبور. جلست على ظهور الخيل، راكعة مبتهلة قاتلت الحيوانات وخاضت الحروب. رقصت واحتست النبيذ وقرأت الكتب المصنوعة من الحجر...".
بهذه الترنيمة تبدأ وتختم "أنايس نين" روايتها، عبر تقاطع شخصيات يبدو عبثياً للوهلة الأولى، غير أن قراءة متأنية لهذا الـ"كولاج" اللغوي تؤكد عكس ذلك. إن هذه الرواية سبر لأغوار المخيلة والحلم عبر عيني رسامة شابة غريبة الأطوار. وقد اعتبرت هذه الرواية عملاً بالغ التطرف سنة نشرها في العام 1964، إذ أن المؤلفة تكتب في حل تام من البنية التقليدية وتترك العنان لشخصياتها بالتجول في المكان والزمان بحرية مطلقة في محاولتها لوصف الحياة بكل صفاء الحلم المبعثر.
تستخدم المؤلفة الكلمات بروعة كما الألوان، بأسلوب تحريضي ونثر محكم اقتصادي بالغ الجرأة. لا دهشة إذن إن قورنت بمارسيل بروست.
