موضوع هذا الكتاب المواسِمُ التي كانت للعرب منذ عصر الجاهلية، وهي مواقيتُ معروفةٌ ثابتةٌ، إذا أهَلَّتْ اجتمعوا إليها، في مواضِعَ مُعَيَّنةٍ، لأغراضٍ مختلفةٍ كثيرة: دينيَّةٍ وإجتماعيَّةٍ وتجاريَّةٍ وأدبيَّة.
ومن الممكن التمييزُ بين أنواعٍ ثلاثةٍ من هذه المواسم، الأولُ: مواسمُ الحجِّ والأَعْيادِ، والثاني: مواسمُ الخروج إلى البَوادي في أوقات الربيع، والثالثُ: مواسمُ الأسواق العامَّة، وكان يَصْحَبُها، فوق التجارة، مُخَالَطةٌ وإجتماعٌ وسياسةٌ وأدَبٌ وسَمَرٌ ولَهْوٌ، وربما نُسْكٌ وحجٌّ أيضاً.
