يعدّ الروائي الأرجنتيني خوليو كاورتاثار قناص الأدب. ولكونه حالة استثنائية تمثل التمرد الدائم ضد الأماكن المشتركة وسلبية العقل، فقد أعاد الحياة للكلمة إذ خلق لغته الخاصة. سخريته اللاذعة والمدمرة، ورؤيته المأساوية للإنسان الحديث، وقلقه الأنطولوجي المرتبط بملاحظة حادة لليومي، خلق من الحكايات العادية رواية متحركة وميتافيزيقية، وخيالاته تعالج مشكلات الإنسان الأمريكي الحالي، وترفعها إلى المستوى العالمي. سبق كل معاصريه من كتاب أمريكا اللاتينية في المخاطرة بالتجديد وهرب من التسميات وقدم، بحسب رأي أحد النقاد الأمريكيين، "أكبر موسوعة من المشاعر والرؤى التي ظهرت عند جيل الكتاب العالميين بعد الحرب".
ولد في بروكسل عام 1914، وعمل معلماً للمرحلة الابتدائية ثم مدرساً للمرحلة الثانوية في الريف الأرجنتيني. ونظراً لعدائه للبيرونية تخلى عن كرسي جامعي، واهتم بالغرفة الأرجنتينية للكتاب في بوينس آيرس، ثم أنهى في زمن قياسي دراساته في الترجمة واستقر في باريس عام 1952. عمل مع اليونيسكو وسافر إلى جميع بلدان العالم.
الرابحون تجمعهم المصادفة على متن السفينة مالكولم، ويتواجهون في فضاء هذه السفينة المغلق. فيظهر الجو الغريب منذ بداية الرواية. ولكن هذه الرحلة البحرية توازيها رحلة أخرى داخلية لكل مسافر نحو المواجهة مع نفسه بحثاً عن تحقيق ذاته. ويضاف إلى الأهمية النفسية والسوسيولوجية بعد ميتافيزيقي بفضل "المناجيات" التي يقوم بها بيرسو، والذي يعطي الواقع رؤية أكثر بنيوية وشعرية.
يمتزج المضحك بالمبكي في هذه الرواية ذات المستوى الرفيع، والتي تقدم في الوقت نفسه رسماً ذكياً وجديداً للواقع الأرجنتيني.
