يكتسب الأطفال اللغة من خلال القدرة الهائلة التي منحهم الله إياها على الكلام والتعلم, فيصل الطفل إلى هذه السن (5 إلى 6 سنوات) وهو مزود بمعرفة جيده للغة، إلا أن بعض الأطفال قد لا يحسنون نطق بعض الحروف أو الكلمات. أما تعلم الطفل للقراءة والكتابة فشيء مختلف إذ يحتاج الطفل إلى أساليب محددة حتى يستطيع تعلم هاتين المهارتين.
معظم المربون يفضلون تدريس القراءة بدءاً بالجملة، ألا أن باحثة أمريكية راجعت الدراسات التي جرت حول الموضوع (قبل عام 1977) وجدت أن النتائج كانت لصالح الطلبة الذين درسوا بالكلمة والحرف وتقول الباحثة "ورغم ذلك يصر المربون على التعليم بالجملة" وضع هذا الكتاب بدءاً بالحرف (دون التقيد بترتيب الحروف) والكلمة كي ينطق الأطفال الحروف والكلمات بشكلها الصحيح كما يتعلم الأطفال رسم الحروف مباشرة وكيفية جمع عدة حروف لتشكيل كلمة.
وضع الكتاب على أساس تقسيم حروف الهجاء -باستثناء أحرف المد- إلى مجموعات كان في المجموعة الأولى ستة حروف وبقية المجموعات خمسة حروف وباستثناء المجموعة الأولى فكل كلمة جديدة تتكون من الحرف الجديد (لون بالأحمر) ومجموعة حروف سبق أن عرفها الطفل.
يأمل المؤلف من الطفل بعد دراسة الكتاب نطق الحروف من مخارجها الصحيحة ورسمها وتكوين كلمات ثلاثية، ومعرفة الجمل الاسمية والفعلية وبعض حروف الجر وأل التعريف.
