لم تحظ دراسة النظم الإقتصادية بأهمية تذكر في الأدب الإقتصادي الكلاسيكي، فلم يكن هناك سوى النظام الرأسمالي، وحتى بالنسبة للماركسية بوصفها نظرية ناقدة للرأسمالية ومتنبئة بقيام الإشتراكية لم تكن بمثابة نظرية لنظام مغاير للرأسمالية - ونعني النظام الإشتراكي - فلم تتضمن أعمال كارل ماركس إنجاز مبادئ محددة عن كيفية عمل نظامه المستقبلي وإنما تضمنت إشارات استلهمها المنظرون الأوائل للإشتراكية أوائل القرن العشرين، وأصبحت مادة النظم الإقتصادية المقارنة تحتل موقعاً مقبولاً بوصفه حقلاً من حقول علم الإقتصاد المعاصر.
يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم الأسس النظرية لدراسة النظم الإقتصادية، وتطابق خطة الكتاب المقرر الدراسي للمادة التي تدرس في صفوف المرحلة الرابعة في أقسام الإقتصاد، مع إضافة فصل عن الإقتصاد الإسلامي، وتعديل بعض مكونات الخطة المقترحة منذ منتصف التسعينات بما يتلائم مع التطورات الفكرية منذ ذلك الحين وبما له علاقة بالنظم الإقتصادية.
ويتكون الكتاب من سبعة فصول، تناول الأول منها مفهوم النظم الإقتصادي ورصد تعريفها والإتجاهات الفكرية المختلفة في الكتابات الخاصة بها، ثم علاقة النظام الإقتصادي بالنظام السياسي، وأخيراً النظم الإقتصادية في عالم الواقع.
أما الفصل الثاني فقد انصرف إلى تحليل مكونات النظام الإقتصادي، وتناول الفصل الثالث مفهوم النظام الرأسمالي، مبتدئاً بتعريفه ونشأته ومراحل تطوره المختلفة، والعناصر الديناميكية له، وعناصر القوة والضعف فيه، ويركز الفصل الرابع على النظام الإشتراكي.
أما الفصل الخامس، فقد انصرف إلى تقديم مفهوم النظام الإقتصادي في الإسلام، وحلل الفصل السادس تجارب البناء الرأسمالي في ثلاثة بلدان هي: الولايات المتحدة واليابان وألمانيا، واختص الفصل السابع بتحليل تجربتي البناء الإشتراكي في الإتجاه السوفييتي السابق والصين.
