بين الحقول لمح المغامرون الخمسة جسماً عجيباً، راقداً، كان جسماً عجيباً، طوله لا يزيد على المتر، نحيفاً جداً كأنه مجموعة من العصي ألصقت ببعضها وكونت هذا الشخص، وكان له رأس صغير مستدير كأنه برتقاله كبيرة، ورغم جلبابه الواسع القصير الذي كان يرتديه فإنه لم يفلح في إخفاء نحافته غير العادية، كانت ساقاه وقدماه أشبه بالعصي التي تصنع منها الأقفاص. وما إن شاهد المغامرون حتى حملق فيهم بدهشة وأطلق صوتاً عجيباً أشبه بصياح الديك منطلقاً بين الحقول كأنه شبه ملثم. هذا هو مرزوق العبيط الذي يشفق عليه أهل القرية ويساعدونه، ولكن وراء تصرفات مرزوق الأخرق ذكاء حاد، فمن هو إذاً مرزوق العبيط؟ وما علاقته بالحريق الذي نشب في القرية؟ ومن هو عتريس المتهم بافتعال الحريق؟ هذا ما سيكشف عنه "لغز مجنون القرية" الذي اعد خصيصاً لتسلية القارئ الناشئ، ولمساعدته على تحليل الوقائع ليصل من خلالها إلى اكتشاف الحقيقة.
بعد وصول المغامرين الخمسة إلى قريتهم، يفاجئهم حريق في بيت عم سلامة وآخر في منزل فرج الله.. ما علاقة عتريس بهذين الحريقين؟ هل عاد عتريس فعلاً إلى القرية من أجل الانتقام؟ ومرزوق "العبيط".. من هو؟ وما علاقته بموضوع الحرائق الغامضة في القرية؟ هذا ما سنعرفه عند قراءة هذا اللغز المشوق.
