يروي كاتب هذه الدراسة، وهو علامة ومفكر إسلامي بارز قصة الغارة الحضارية التي تهدف إلى قطع جسور الإتصال الحضارية بين ماضي الأمة وحاضرها، فيعرّف هذه الجسور ويحدد دور كل منها، وهي البيت والمدرسة والمسجد، ويرى أن محور الصراع ليس بين القديم والجديد، فليس من أحد ينكر حتمية التجديد وضرورته، وإنما بين "الإنقطاع والإتصال"، فتتمثل الإشكالية في السؤال المحوري التالي: كيف يتمّ التجديد والتحوّل من طور إلى طور؟ وهل يتم ذلك بقطع الجذور أو بالإتصال بها، ونمو الجديد منها؟.
يجيب العلاّمة الآصفي عن هذا السؤال من طريق معرفة معالم حركة الإنقطاع الحضاري ومظاهرها ورجالها وآثارها، ويرى أن هذه الحركة عملت من نحو أول على سلخ الأمة عن ماضيها وتراثها، ومن نحو ثان على مسخ هذا الجيل حضارياً.
