"أخذت الشمس تغيب كالسفينة المشتعلة وسط البحر، بألوانها الحمراء التي صبغت لون المياه المتلألئة. بدأ الظلام يخيم على الميناء الصغير، والبضائع متكدسة هنا وهناك.. وبقاياها منتشرة على الأرصفة. بدأت الحركة تقل والكل يستعد للذهاب إلى منزله بعد يوم من العمل المضني. ها هو عم بوسعود الحمالي العجوز يمسك بلجام حصانه الذي أثقلته الأحمال منذ الصباح الباكر. بدأ أبو سعود يصعد التلة الصغيرة المطلة على الميناء. ويسير في السكة الضيقة التي اصطفت على جوانبها المخازن.. والتي يطلق عليها (سكة بهينة) نسبة إلى التلة الصغيرة التي تقع فيها هذه المخازن. سار العجوز برغم سنيه السبعين، يجر حصانه ويصعد به إلى التلة إلى السكة الضيقة.. وسط الظلام لا يسمع سوى حوافر حصانه.. السكة هادئة وخالية من أي إنسان.. التعب أخذ منه كل مأخذ وكذلك حصانه".
