يبرز الكتاب كيفيات اشتغال الفكر الأصوليّ، وآلياته في تدبّر المصحف نصّاً تشريعيّاً أوّل في فترات من التاريخ متباينة. ومازال الفكر الإسلامي، إلى اليوم، يثير هذه المسائل في أكثر من فضاء.
كما بيّن وضع علم أصول الفقه، وجهود العلماء في إرسائه، في إطاره العام من العلوم الإسلاميّة، فعرف المصطلحات والإشكاليات المتّصلة بموضوع البحث، واختبر أهمّ المسلّمات الأصوليّة والاعتقاديّة عند المسلمين، والتي تخص القرآن، وهي: الثبوت، والبيان، والشمول، فاستعرض هذه المسلّمات، وحلّل أبعادها، مثلما تجلّت في المدوّنة الأصوليّة، ووضح اختلاف اتّجاهات أصحابها، وفرقهم الكلاميّة، ومذاهبهم الفقهيّة، ومدى أثر الواقع ومقتضياته فيها.
كما بحث في السنّة المتواترة، وفي خبر الآحاد، وفي المخصّصات بأنواعها؛ بل وقف على مصادر التشريع مثل الإجماع، والاجتهاد، والقياس، وغيرها من الأصول الفرعية، وعاد إلى أهمّ المصادر الأصوليّة السنيّة، والاعتزاليّة، والشيعيّة، والخارجيّة، واستفاد من كتب العقائد، والتفسير، والفقه، والتاريخ، وغيرها، لوضع البحث في إطاره من العلوم الإسلامية.
