يتضمن الكتاب مجموعة من الدراسات التي تبحث في التراث الجغرافي العربي، الذي يعتبر حلقة أساسية في تطور الحضارة العالمية وبشكل أخص علم الجغرافيا فيها.
ويتحدث المستشرق السوفيتي كراتشكوفسكي مبيناً أهمية ذلك التراث بقوله "ولا يقتصر محيط الأدب الجغرافي العربي على البلاد العربية وحدها بل يمدنا بمعلومات من الدرجة الأولى عن جميع البلاد التي بلغها العرب أو التي تجمعت لديهم معلومات عنها وبذلك بنفس الصورة المتنوعة التي وصفوا بها بلاد الإسلام.
وقد يحدث أحياناً أن تمثل المادة الجغرافية العربية أما المصدر الوحيد أو الأهم لتاريخ حقبة معينة لقطر ما، كما يؤكد في مكان آخر على أنه يجب الإعتراف "بأهميته العلمية القصوى والتنوع الكبير في فنونه وأنماطه، ففيه تقابلنا الرسالة العلمية في الفلك والرياضيات، كما تقابلنا الكتب العلمية التي وضعت من أجل عمال الدواوين وجمهرة المسافرين".
وإننا إذ نقرأ الدراسات التي تضمنها الكتاب لنؤكد من جديد عبقرية العرب العلمية في المناخ والرياضيات والفلك والملاحظة الجغرافية العلمية الدقيقة للظواهر؛ وهذا يدحض كل المقولات الشعوبية والمشبوهة التي تزيف العلم والحقائق والتراث والتي تدعي بأن العقل العرب، عقل أدب وخرافة، وأن العلوم العربية ما هي إلا نقولات عن اليونان والهنود وغيرهم.
إن الكتاب يضع بين أيدينا نماذج من التراث العلمي العربي العظيم.
