يتناول كتاب الصّوتيّات جانباً أساسياً من جوانب اللغة. فالصّوت مكوّن أساسي من مكونات الوحدة اللغوية، سواء كانت هذه الوحدة كلمة أم مجموعة من الكلمات، ويقدم خصائص الوحدة اللغوية، أو الإشارة اللغوية، التي عالجها اللسانيّون مع التركيز على الجوانب الصّوتيّة التي تدحل في تحديد اللغة وعملها التواصليّ: اعتباطية العلاقة بين الدال والمدلول، وانتماء الإشارة اللغوية إلى نظام محدد، وأولوية الإشارة الصّوتيّة على الإشارة المكتوبة، وخضوع الإشارة لعامل الزمن، والانبناء المزدوج.
تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب الذي نضعه بين يدي القارئ العربي من كون مؤلفته العالمة الفرنسية جاكلين فيسيار ترأس مختبر الصّوتيّات في جامعة السوربون الجديدة (باريس الثالثة)، وهي تضع فيه زبدة تجاربها التي تمتد على سنوات من البحوث النظرية، والدراسات التطبيقية، والتجارب المخبرية، فيما تقدّم الأسُس العلمية والعملية للصّوتيّات التي تخصّ جانباً مهماً من جوانب الدراسات اللسانية إن لم يكن أهمّها.
