يرتبط الإهتمام الحضاري "بالغير" ببروز دوافع وقيام حاجات حيوية تدعو إلى "الرحلة" أو تدعو إلى "الإغتراب" عن الحضارة الأصلية لإستجلاء حضارة الغير، والحاجة هي التي تدفع بحضارة الغير من ظلام النسيان والإهمال إلى دائرة الوعي، وقصة الإتصال بين الغرب والشرق هي قصة هذه الحاجات والدوافع.
والدوافع تتفاوت بين "الرحلة إلى الغرب" و"الرحلة إلى الشرق"، فالطهطاوي "يرحل" إلى الغرب طلباً للعلوم الحديثة وبحثاً عن أسباب الحضارة والقوة، فوجهته هي حضارة العصر الحية المتطورة، اما "لين" فإنه يشد الرحال إلى الشرق مدفوعاً بروح المغامرة والإستكشاف، فوجهته الماضي وآثار الماضي وحضارة الشرق الغابرة.
وفي هذه الدراسة المقارنة يعرض "ناجي نجيب" لمقدمات وأسباب كتابي "الرحلة"، فكلاهما قد وضع إستجابة لحاجات وتوقعات وإهتمامات بعينها في ظل مرحلة تاريخية محددة، وكل منهما، إذ ينقل لقرائه "حضارة الغير" الغريبة، أي يترجمها لحضارته، يساهم بدوره في صياغة هذه التوقعات والإهتمامات.
