ثمة عناصر عديدة تجمع بين هذه الفنتازية التي نقلب صفحاتها وبين "ألف ليلة وليلة"، وحتى بينها وبين الأعمال الملحمية. فحكايا علاء الدين وعلي بابا والسندباد البحري التي أسرت مخيلة القرّاء على مر العصور لها ما يقابلها في مغامرات "السعدان". ينطوي العمل كما في "ألف ليلة وليلة" على أحداث يشترك فيها الجن فضلاً عن الحيوانات والمغامرات الغرائبية، إضافة إلى المطارحات الواقعية. وإذا كانت "ألف ليلة وليلة" تأخذ الهند والصين مسرحاً لبعض حكاياتها، كذلك الحال، فإن أحداث هذه الفنتازية التي بين أيدينا تدور ما بين الهند والصين.
ولما كانت شهرزاد تتوقف عن السرد كل ليلة لتثير شوق شهريار، بدوره يتوقف الراوي في هذا العمل مع نهاية كل فصل عن تكملة مجرى الأحداث ليحض القارئ على متابعة أكثر حماسة. أما لجهة الشبه مع الملحمة، فذلك يتمثل في إشراك المخلوقات الخرافية ذات القوى الخارقة في الأحداث، فضلاً عن إضرام معارك طاحنة، وتدخل الآلهة، وتحويل الأشخاص وحتى الأشياء الفانية إلى خالدة، ولا شك أن المخيلة التي أبدعت أحداث ومشاهد بل ومناظر هذا العمل ومزجتها بإشارات من الفلسفة البوذية، ضمن إطار في الإيماءات الساخرة، جعلت منه عملاً يرقى إلى الأعمال الأدبية الإنسانية الخالدة.
