تعدُّ مرحلة رياض الأطفال ذات خصوصيّة في حياة الطفل في جميع المؤسسات التربويّة في العالم، فالأطفال هم المستقبل، وفرح الحياة، ومجدها الحقيقيّ.
ويأخذ مفهوم المنهاج في رياض الأطفال معنىً مختلفاً نوعاً ما عن المنهاج في مرحلة التعليم الابتدائيّ أو الثانويّ، حيث اتفق المربون على خطوطه العريضة وإن اختلف المنفّذون له على التفاصيل، فهو ليس منهاجاً محدداً يقوم على مواد دراسيّة مقررة، فهو منهاج يقوم على النشاط ويعتمد عليه، هدفه الأول تنمية مدارك الطفل وتربية حواسه وإشباع رغباته وتلبية احتياجاته واكتشاف ميوله ومواهبه والسماح لهذه المواهب والميول بالنمو والظهور في جوٍّ تسوده الحريّة والانطلاق بعيداً عن الكبت والإرهاق والتشدّد في إتباع نظام معين. وأمّا هدف المعرفة فيكون هدفاً غير مقصود لذاته وإنّما يأتي نتيجة لمختلف النشاطات التي يمارسها الطفل وبالقدر الذي يسمح له بمزاولة هذا النشاط بما يتماشى واستعداد الطفل وقدراته.
فجاء كتابنا "مناهج رياض الأطفال" بكلّ ما تضمنهُ من معارفٍ وخبراتٍ صقلتها التجربة والممارسة، مستندة إلى نتائج البحوث النفسيّة والتربويّة في ميادين المناهج والتدريس والتعليم؛ لتقديم العون للإخوة المعلمين والدارسين والباحثين والعاملين في مجال الطفولة المبكرة؛ لتحقيق التنمية الشاملة المتكاملة للأطفال.
وقد أظهرت الخطوات الأولى التي خطاها الكتاب في طبعته الأولى بعض الملاحظات سواء أكانت من التغذية الراجعة التي حصلنا عليها من التطبيق الميدانيّ والعمليّ أم من ملاحظات الزملاء أعضاء الهيئة التدريسيّة في الكليات والجامعات ممن درَّسوا الكتاب في مساقاتهم فلهم منا الشكر والتقدير، وقد وجدنا من الخير أن نعود إليها بالتهذيب والتنقيح والإضافة.
