يأتي هذا المعجم ثمرة سنين من الجهود المتواصلة في ميدان تحرير المواضيع المتعلقة بعلوم الكمبيوتر.
اعتمد في اختيار المصطلحات على أسس علمية واضحة تتلخص بمسح دوائر معلومات وقواميس وعشرات المجلات والكتب المتخصصة الأجنبية، والتعرف بالتالي إلى المصطلحات التي ستجابه القارئ العربي فعلياً، عند تصفحه أي مستند إنكليزي يعني بشؤون الكمبيوتر. وقد أدت هذه المقاربة العلمية إلى إيراد عشرات الكلمات والتعابير التي لم ترد بعد في أي معجم عربي متخصص. بل نؤكد كذلك على إيراد عشرات التعابير الأخرى التي لم ترد في أي معجم أجنبي متخصص، وهي من المفردات التي تناقلتها وسائل الإعلام واستخدامها العاملون في الميدان المعلوماتي، وامتلأت بها المجلات المتخصصة، ولم يتلقفها بعد واضعو القواميس والمعاجم.
يرتكز التعبير باللغة العربية عن المفردات الكمبيوترية الأجنبية على مبادئ واضحة نلخصها بالآتي:
1-سهولة لفظ الكلمة وحفظها والتعامل بها وقربها من أذن المستعمل.
2-عدم ترجمة الكلمة بأكثر من كلمة، إلا في ما ندر من الحالات الاستثنائية.
3-انتقاء الكلمة الموازية للمصطلح الإنكليزي ولمحتوى المفهوم معاً.
4-اعتماد الاشتقاقات اللغوية المعترف بها وغير المتعارضة مع قرارات وتوصيات المجامع اللغوية العربية.
5-استعمال وتثبيت المصطلحات العربية التي اتفق عليها.
6-إرجاع المصطلح الإنكليزي الذي اقتبس أصلاً من العربية إلى مصدره.
وزيادة في الإيضاح تم تزويد المعجم بمطوله في العلوم الكمبيوترية، كما وتزويده بأكثر من ستين رسماً توضيحياً وبملاحق عن لغات البرمجة، أنظمة التشغيل الألفاظ الأوائلية والمختصرة والجداول التحويلية.
