هذا هو الكتاب الثاني في سلسلة البعث والقضايا الكبرى للأستاذ ميشيل عفلق. وقد دأبنا في هذا الكتاب على رصد أهم وأبرز ما كتبه مفكر البعث ورائده حول الاشتراكية حسب التسلسل الزمني للمقالات كما فعلنا في الكتاب الأول (البعث والوحدة). تظهر هذه المقالات أصالة الفكر الاشتراكي عند البعث بمعنى أن الاشتراكية كانت في التصور الأول للثورة العربية، وفكر الثورة العربية وأنها من صلب التصور الأساسي، وإن تلازم هذه الفكرة وقدم الحديث عنها وربطها بالأهداف والعصر من الأساس، أي بالديمقراطية والقومية وبالتفاعل الجدالي بين التحرر القومي والتطور الاجتماعي والاقتصادي يدل دلالة أكيدة على أنها غير طارئة، بل إنها نظرة رائدة لا على الصعيد العربي وحسب، بل وعلى الصعيد العالمي أيضاً.
وهي تحمل سمة التميز والاستقلالية والخصوصية العربية منذ البدء، وبالتالي فإنها بعيدة عن التبعيدة والتقليد من جهة، وعن الانفعال والرفض المتشنج لتجارب الآخرين ونظرياتهم من جهة أخرى. وقد تطورت الاشتراكية ضمن هذا المجرى وأن ورودها بشكل تسلسل زمني يفسح المجال أمام دراسة تطور الفكرة عند البعث.
