هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن بحث في مصدر من مصادر التراث الإسلامي،وهو كتاب "الموطأ" للإمام الجليل مالك بن أنس المتوفي سنة 179هـ على الراجح، مؤسس المذهب المالكي، وأحد أئمَة المذاهب الأربعة المشهورة، وهذا المصدر ليس كتاب حديث فقط وليس كتاب حديث وليس كتاب فقه فقط، وإنَما هوكتاب جامع للإثنين معاً.
وعلى هذا مدوَن في الفقه والحديث، وهو أوَل مؤلف ثابت النسب من غير شكَ إلى الإمام مالك. ويعدّ الأوَل في التأليف في الفقه والحديث معاً، وأثنى عليه كثير من العلماء منهم: الإمام الشافعي وابن وهب، وأهمية هذا الكتاب إعتنى بدراسته الدكتور عبد العزيز الحوشان حيث تناولت خطَة الدراسة في كتاب الموطأ في الفصول التالية:
الفصل الأول: نبذة موجزة عن مؤلَف هذا الكتاب، ودراسته المستقلة بعد تخرَجه على أفاضل علماء المدينة، والعصر الذي عاش فيه الإمام مالك بن أنس.
الفصل الثاني: في معنى الموطأ، سبب تسميته بهذا الإسم وأسباب تأليفه.
الفصل الثالث: في تدوين كتاب الموطا.
الفصل الرابع: في مسالك الإمام مالك في كتابه الموطأ.
الفصل الخامس: في عدد أحاديث الموطأ، وأقسامها/ ونوعيَة كل قسم منها.
الفصل السادس: الرجال الذين تلقَى عنهم الإمام مالك كتاب الموطأ، والرجال الذين تلقوا عن الإمام كتاب الموطأ.
الفصل السابع: من كتب على الموطأ أو شرحه أو عمل فيه شيئاً ما.
الفصل الثامن: مرتبة الموطأ في كتب الحديث.
الفصل التاسع: المسائل الفقهية في الموطأ.
الفصل العاشر: مزايا الموطأ في عرض مسائله الفقهيَة.
الفصل الحادي عشر: خصوصيَات الموطأ.
وأما الخاتمة: فقد تضمنت أصول فقه الإمام مالك في كتاب الموطأ.
