جمع المؤلف في هذا الكتاب أخبار الصحابة والتابعين والخلفاء والسلاطين وأثبت زبدهم ليغتني بذلك في المذاكرة، وتكون نزهة مقنعة للمحاضرة وكان مؤلف هذا الكتاب وهو بدر الدين، الحسن بن حسين بن أحمد بن أحمد بن محمد بن علي بن عبد الله بن علي - الحنفي المعروف بابن الطولوني مولود بالقاهرة سنة 836هـ لأسرة عرفت أصولها بالميول العلمية والمكانة الرفيعة في مجتمعها.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى بتحقيقه "د.محمد كمال الدين عز الدين علي" معتمداً على نسختان نسخة مكتبة أحمد الثالث بتركيا وأخرى بالقاهرة، وكان موضوع هذا الكتاب رسالة لطيفة الحجم، وزع المؤلف مادتها على قسمين، جعل أولهما للتأريخ المقتضب للسيرة النبوية، ودول الخلافة الإسلامية: الراشدة، فالأموية، فالعباسية إلى خليفة وقته "المستنجد بالله"، بينما جعل ثانيهما تأريخاً لمصر منذ الفتح إلى وقت مؤرخنا، مقدماً لذلك بفصول تمهيدية، أبان فيها عن فضل مصر كما سجله القرآن والسنّة النبوية المطهرة، وذكر من كان بها من النبيين والصديقين والصحابة والعلماء والحكماء، ومن صاهر أهلها من الأنبياء، ومن غلب عليها من الأمم قبل الفتح.
وتلك فترة زمنية طويلة، نظمت مادة الكتاب من خلالها في ترجمات متتابعة من حيث الترتيب والزمن، أبرزت مقدرة فائقة للمؤرخ على الإستيعاب والتحصيل، ثم التدوين في حيز ضيق.
