يحاول الكاتب استشراف المستقبل عبر تحليل الماضي وتقييم الحاضر، ووضع تصور للمستقبل، مشيراً إلى أن ذلك يكون بالتعرف إلى المنهجيات المختلفة للتعامل مع السيناريوهات المحتملة، وذلك ببيان الحقائق وعرض الإحصاءات وأهم المشكلات التي تواجه اقتصاد إمارة أبوظبي في ظل التحديات الإقليمية والدولية الراهنة والمتغيرات السياسية والاقتصادية. كما يقدم الكتاب المقترحات المنوطة بوضع حلول لهذه المشكلات، بحيث يمكن تطبيقها على أرض الواقع بالإمكانات المتاحة، والبحث عن مصادر بديلة لتنمية الإيرادات غير النفطية التي تساعد الدخل القومي للإمارة، لتعويض ما نقص بسبب انخفاض سعر البترول، الذي يعد أهم دعائم الكيان الاقتصادي ومحدداً رئيساً لمسارات التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية التي شهدتها المنطقة خلال العقود الأخيرة. ويهدف الكتاب إلى رسم خريطة طريق لاقتصاد متنوع ومستدام يضاهي أو يفوق مثيله في اقتصادات الدول المتقدمة، مثل النرويج وسنغافورة، مؤكداً أنه لابد من تبني نموذج اقتصادي إنتاجي غير تقليدي، بعيداً عن الاعتماد الكلي على النفط، بحيث يشكل السياج الحقيقي الذي يحمي مسيرة التنمية وضمان استدامتها.
