يقول المؤلف بأن البذرة الأولى في اختياره لموضوع الحيوان كمادة للقاموس الذي وضعه هي كثرة طرح الأسئلة حول الحيوان واسمه وصوته وأنثاه وولده وبيئته في مناهج تدريس اللغة العربية ودراستها، فيجد الطالب نفسه أمام أسئلة تصعب الإجابة عنها، وهي في حاجة إلى معرفتها لتغني قاموسه التعبيري، ويفهم ما بين يديه من نصوص وقصائد. وما شجعه، بالإضافة إلى ذلك، طرافة الموضوع وحصره لموضوع الحيوانات عند العرب في معجم واحد يمكن الرجوع إليه بسهولة لمعرفة أسماء حيوان ما وأنثاه وولده وصوته وبيته.
وقد اعتمد في موضوعه هذا على معجم لسان العرب كمصدر أساسي، كما أنه اعتمد مصادر ومراجع أخرى متممة، مشيراً إلى أماكن وجود محتوياته في هذه المصادر والمراجع، مستقياً منها أيضاً ما فات لسان العرب ذكره.
