إذا كان الكتاب جزءاً لا يتجزأ من حياتك فأحببته ولازمته وحرصت على أن يكون سليماً وأن ينجو مؤلفه من العثرات... سجلت، وأنت تقرأ، على هذا الكتاب أو ذاك ما وقع فيه المؤلف سهواً أو خطأً وبمعنى آخر سجلت فوتاً. ويصعب أن يوجد مؤلف بدون فوات في المنهج إن لم يكن في العلم. وهنا وجب عليك، خدمة للمؤلِّف والمؤلَّف والقارئ... والعلم والحقيقة أن تنبه إلى ما تعثر عليه، أو به، وتصحح، ما أمكنك التصحيح. وهذا ما سار عليه مؤلف هذا الكتاب فقد قرأ، كثيراً كثير، ثم شرع بالتنبه إلى الفوات مبكراً، ودفعه هذا الشيء الذي نفذ إليه قلمه إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب "فوات المؤلفين" وإذا كان من شيء يتصف به مؤلف هذا الكتاب فهو حرصه الشديد على بيان الخطأ وإعلانه وتصحيحه حباً في أن يقل مع الزمن، فيزداد الكاتب حذراً، ويزداد القارئ تحذيراً، ودفعه هذا الشيء إلى الاختلاف مبكراً، كما ذكرنا، إلى نشر ما آمن بصحته، وظل يلحق النشر بالنشر منتبهاً ومنبهاً حتى كادت العملية تغلب على مجالي نشاطه وتحتل أحياناً حمل ما هو أولى منها به وأجدى عليه و"أطلب" منه. وها هو يقدم كتابه "فوات المؤلفين" الذي سجل خلاله ملاحظاته التي تطول أو تقصر حول عدد من الكتب التي قرأها بإمعان.
