يسّر التقدم العلمي الانتقال والاتصال بين الشعوب، فجعل الكرة الأرضية أشبه بمدينة صغيرة، يختلط سكانها، ويتعارفون، ويتزاوجون، ويعيش بعضهم مع بعض على اختلاف أديانهم، ومعتقداتهم، وعاداتهم، أصبح من الضروري لكل إنسان أن يلمّ بعقائد الآخرين، فلا يسيء إلى مواطن، أو صديق، أو ضيف، بل يتفهم ما يصدر عنه، ويدرك دافعه، فتصبح المناقشات هادئة والاحترام متبادلاً، وهذا ما دفع المؤلف إلى وضع هذه الموسوعة الميسرة، حيث أنها تعطي فكرة عامة عن كل معتقد ورد فيها، وترشد القارئ إلى مصادر مختلفة لمن يريد الاستزادة والتعمق في أي موضوع تضمنته.
وبما أن الأديان والفرق والمذاهب تعد بالآلاف، لذلك وضع المؤلف لهذه الموسوعة منهجاً يقتضي بأن تتضمن الأديان والعقائد وكل فكرة دينية حية لها أتباع معاصرون، أو تأثير فكري، أو مهدت لظهور "دين وضعي" أو فرقة دينية.
وقد اقتضى ذلك الحديث عن الأنبياء والرسل، وأصحاب الدعوات الذين لهم أتباع كثيرون، والكتب المقدسة عند أتباع كل دين، كما وضمنها المذاهب الإسلامية والمسيحية الحية والطوائف، والفرق، ومن بينها الفرق الصوفية الشهيرة، وحيث إن بعض الكلمات التي غدت مصطلحات يتم تداولها بين الناس، وكثيرون منهم لا يعرفون معناها فقد أضاف المؤلف أكثر المصطلحات الفقهية والصوفية انتشاراً من دون توسع كبير، وذكر المعارك الفاصلة في تاريخ المسلمين والدول المسيحية.
