في طيات هذا المؤلّف جمع يوسف إبراهيم يزبك بعد التنقيب والتفتيش في قسم كبير من مراجع القنصليات الأجنبية؛ ودوّن الكثير عن تاريخ لبنان والتي من خلاله يستطيع المؤرخ الدقيق استقصاء المادة الصحيحة من أجل كتابه أو استقصاء ما يريد عن تاريخ لبنان. وهذه المدوّنات جاءت في "أوراق لبنانية" مجلته التي كان هدفه من إصدارها حفظ هذا التاريخ بأوراقه الناصعة.
وقد كتب صفحة في تاريخ لبنان، وذلك في مرحلتين: الأولى نضالاً والأخرى تأريخاً. ومن جانب آخر فقد كان في حياته السياسية الصافية أصدقاء كثر من رجالات النضال-زعماء العرب الذين نشأت بينه وبينهم مودة وألفة، فاطلع منهم على أسرار كثيرة، وعلى أحداث خطيرة جرت في ظلال النضال، جاء ذكرها في أوراقه اللبنانية.
