في مجموعته القصصية "أكاذيب أمي الخمس" يضعنا خير الدين جمعة أمام شخصيات قلقلة، مأزوقة، لها مساراتها المفترقة، ومصائرها السلبية، فيذهب كل منها إلى مصيره بمعزل عن الآخر، حيث تشكل كل قصة حالة خاصة بعينها، ففي القصة التي افتتح بها الكاتب المجموعة (عارية) نحن أمام مشهد من "الإنتظار" تعيشه البطلة حتى يسيطر حياتها، بانتظار شخصٍ لم يأت ولن يأتي أبداً، فتهيم في الطرقات ليستقر بها الحال "امرأة عارية جالسة تحت شجرة على الرصيف وقد ضمت ركبتيها إلى صدرها وأسندت ذقنها إلى ركبتيها وشدت قدميها بيديها.. تلتفت نظرتها الخضراء الدامعة يميناً وشمالاً بحثاً عن شخص لم يأت...". أما في القصة التي حملت عنوان المجموعة.. أكاذيب أمي الخمس، يصف لنا الراوي معنى "الفقد الذي يلَم بالطفل حينما يفقد أعز ما عنده (أمه) ولم يتبق له منها سوى الذكرى، حتى صار للكذب معنى آخر جميل حين يكون مصدره الأم فيتذكر كذبتها الأولى حينما عادر والده الحياة وهي لا تزال توهمه أنه "سيعود" ويجيبها ببراءة الأطفال "وكيف يترك حذاؤه"؟ وعلى هذا الدرب تسير قصص المجموعة، التي تظهر قدرة الراوي على إخراج الحكاية في الخطاب المناسب لها، مع كفاءة عالية في نسج البنية الروائية المناسبة للعالم المرجعي الذي تحيل إليه كل قصة، فيجتمع في العمل فائدة الحكاية ومتعة الخطاب.
يضم الكتاب ثلاثة عشر قصة قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "عارية"، "كاره المطر"، "لسان الغولة"، أكاذيب أمي الخمس"، "مات ليلة دخلته"، "سارق الجوكاندة"، "حلم رجل ميت"، "درسي الأول"، "أمينات مخملية لامرأة ماتت فجأة"، "هلوسات"، "عيون شيراز تبكي المقام الزكي"، و"يوم فراقها".
