الكتاب هو في نقد النقد المعماري، لكونه لا يفسر العمارة ذاتها، وإنما يتناول تفسيرها استناداً إلى فرضية معينة حول طبيعتها. وهو في حقيقة الأمر مقالة واحدة طويلة. في الفصول الأول والثاني والثالث من الكتاب يقدم بونتا سلسلة من الآراء المتضاربة حول الأعمال الفنية والمعمارية مع أمثلة متنوعة، مبيناً أن الفوضى الظاهرية لهذه الآراء مبطنها من الداخل نوع من التجانس يوحدها ضمن الإطار الفاهيمي الخاص بكل منها. وفي الفصل الرابع والخامس يبين أن هناك أيضاً منطلقاً أو نظاماً معيناً يكمن في الأساليب التي تتوالى بها تفسيرات العمل الواحد. وقد اختار (الجناح الألماني) الذي صممه (ميس فان دورو) لمعرض برشلونة في 1929 ليكون مثاله الرئيسي لتوضيح هذه الفكرة. وعلى الرغم من أن (يونتا) قد يبتعد بنا عن مجال العمارة في بداية الكتاب، إلا أنه يفعل ذلك ليدخلنا إليها مجدداً فيما بعد من الزاوية المناسبة للنظر إلى الموضوع.
