روايات بوليسية مشوقة نبتت من أرض الواقع، وتمت تفاصيلها في رحاب خيال اجاثا كريستي التي تقنع من خلال أجواء رواياتها بأنها لا بد أنها كانت تعمل مخبرة بوليسية. فالأحداث المتدافعة التي تسبق أحياناً الجريمة، أو تلك التي تواكبها والتحقيقات التي تجري، والتكهنات التي تفترض والأجواء التي يعيشها القارئ بكل مشاعره المشحونة بالغموض، كلها تشترك مجتمعة في بناء كيان روائي ذا نكهة بوليسية، احتل حيزاً كبيراً في عالم هذه الرواية، التي كانت اجاثا كريستي أهمّ روادها.
لم تكن السيدة "ماك جيليكودي" من تلك اللائي يصبن بالهلاوس، وذلك لأنها قد رأت بعينيها جثة امرأة ماتت خنقاً في قطار، وكانت هي الشاهدة الوحيدة، فلم ير أحد الجثة سواها، ولم يقم أحد بتبليغ البوليس عن الحادث بل لم تعد الجثة موجودة! ولهذا ذهبت السيد "ماك جيليكودي" إلى صديقتها الحميمة "جين ماربل" لكي تساعدها على حل اللغز... فلجأت "جين" إلى إحدى قريباتها المعروف عنها الذكاء والنظر الثاقب، وهي الشابة "لوسي إيلزبارو" ثم اتفقن على مراقبة أسرة "كاكنثورب" لأنها -في نظرهن- الأقرب إلى كشف ذلك اللغز والتوصل إلى كشف هوية القاتل.
"أجاثا كريستي" كاتبة روايات بوليسية، ولدت في جنوب غرب إنجلترا من أب أميركي وأم إنجليزية، لكنها تقول "إني إنجليزية". تتميز عن جميع الروائيين البوليسيين، مما نصبها ملكة عليهم جميعاً. فرواياتها كبيرة متكاملة، فيها عشرات الشخصيات الحية التي يشعر بها الإنسان دائماً. لا تترك شخصية تظهر في رواية لها دون أن توضح كل معالمها في لمسات سريعة طريفة مهما كان دور هذه الشخصية في الرواية، كما تميزت أيضاً بأن أشخاص رواياتها أشخاص عاديون، ولكنهم تعرضوا في الرواية لظروف أزالت القناع الحضاري عن الوحوش القابعة في أعماق كل إنسان. كذلك لم تلجأ الكاتبة العظيمة إلى عنصر الجنس في روايتها، على عكس ما أتبعه الآخرون. إنها كاتبة فاضلة ليس في كتاباتها ما يخجل الآباء أن يطلع عليه الأبناء. ولم تهدف إلى الإثارة، ولا تلجأ إليها. ورواياتها تضمنت أيضاً أهدافاً إنسانية فحواها أن (الجريمة لا تفيد) وأن الخير هو المنتصر في النهاية.
