معجم جذري الترتيب صوناً لطبيعة اللغة العربية التي تشكل الجذور فيها وحدات متماسكة، لكنه توسع في نظام الإحالة فراعى ما أصاب المواد من إعلال بالحذف والتعويض أو من إبدال، فذكرها مرتين: مشروحة في بابها، محالة في صورتها.
من أكبر معاجم اللغة العربية بالمعنى الحصري العلمي لكلمة "معجم لغوي عام". فقد اعتمد على أمهات المعاجم العربية الكبيرة والوسيطة والوجيزة، العامة والمتخصصة... واستخدم القياس لصياغة مواد جديدة، تطبيقاً لقرار مجمع اللغة العربية القاضي بتكملة فروع لغوية لم تذكر بقيتها.
اعتمد نظاماً صارماً في ترتيب الأفعال المجردة والمزيدة، الثلاثية والرباعية، وكذلك الأسماء مما جعل الاطراد والاتساق والتسلسل سمات مميزة ومميزة في آن واحد.
توسل أنواعاً من التحديات والشروح توصلاً إلى غرض الدلالات بشكل واف ودقيق، ولم يكتف بالشرح اللغوي بل استعان بشرح شبه موسوعي أو موسوعي إذا اقتضت ذلك طبيعة المادة.
عني بالفوائد والدقائق اللغوية والنحوية، و المعجم نفسه نهض على نظرة متكاملة إلى اللغة والنحو، وعلى مبدأ الترتيب والربط خصوصا ًفي المجموعات التي تشكل "أسرا معنوية" بحيث أصبح وسيلة إلى التثقيف وليس أداة للبحث عن المعنى المطلوب فحسب.
وإذا تقدم "مكتبة لبنان" على نشر "لغة العرب" بحلة أنيقة ولونين، فإنما تقدم حصيلة جهد تجاوز الخمسة عشر عاماً: بحثاً وتقميشاً، غربلة ومقارنة، نقداً وتدقيقاً... ليكون في متناول علماء المعاجم والباحثين والأساتذة وطلاب المعرفة.
