كانت الأنهار الثلاث الكبرى الحالية كالنيل والفرات والدجلة في الزمن الماضي السحيق، أكثر إتساعاً وأغزر مياهاً عما هي عليه الآن...
لذلك كان الإنسان القديم يعيش على ضفافها في حالة حركة مستمرة، فنراه في الربيع والصيف يبتعد عنها بسبب الفيضانات وكثرة الحشرات والبعوض، فتمده الطبيعة بالخيرات الكثيرة والمناخ العذب والطرائد المتنوعة، خاصة وأنه كان يعيش صيّاداً، حتى بعد أنْ دجن الزراعة والحيوان، وأصبح راعياً، فكان في المروج البعيدة عن ضفاف الأنهر وفي البوادي والصحاري الحالية المحيطة بهذه الأنهار تكثر المراعي التي كانت تشكل مرتعاً خصباً وفيراً لحيوانات الإنسان، وفي فصلي الخريف والشتاء نراه يجاوز النهر.
كان الإنسان قبل عصر الجفاف الرابع، قد قطع مراحل طيبة في تطوره ورقيه استغرقت فترة طويلة جداً من الزمن، ثم نراه فيما بعد قد عرف النار وعرف سكن الكهوف، وبدأ بتدجين الحيوان والزراعة، كل ذلك حدث مع بداية عصر الجفاف الرابع.
في هذه الظروف المناخية الطارئة واجه الإنسان في منطقة المشرق العربي تحدي الجفاف بصبر وشجاعة، حيث أنه استعاض بمياه الأنهار الكبرى مثل النيل والفرات والدجلة وكذلك أنهر العاصي والبليخ والخابور وبردى والساجور عن النقص الحاصل بالأمطار، فأزال الأدغال والأحراش، وجفف المستنقعات، وحفر القنوات، وأقام السدود، وشيئاً فشيئاً هجر حياة الصيد والإلتقاط، وانتقل إلى الزراعة والإستقرار، فأشاد البيوت السكنية وكوّن القرى، وأنشأ الحكومات لتنظيم الرّي والحفاظ على الأمن الخارجي والداخلي.
وفي سورية تم الكشف العالمي الهام في "تل المريبط" بالقرب من الرقة عن أول معلومة معرفية، هي معرفة سبل الإستقرار البشري لأول مرة في تاريخ المعمورة في "تل المريبط" على الفرات في منطقة الرقة.
