"الساعة السابعة إلا خمس دقائق، الرعب يحمل الجواب، وفي محاولة أخيرة رمت بأفكارها إلى الوراء واستجلبت صورة مشاهدتها، وأخيراً أدركت سبب رعبها، وجاء خلاصها جواباً عن سؤال الدركي الشاب. لم يكن رجلاً ولم يكن امرأة، وصرخت: "لم يكن للجثة رأس" وردّدتها" "الجثة بلا رأس" وبصوت واحد سأل العريف ومعاونه وأبو موسى: ولكنك قلت جثة رجل. وكأن الجميع اتفق على السؤال، بينما أم جمال تردّد: "لم يكن لها راس نادوا الشرطة" كأن صوتها هذه المرة متوسلاً وأشبه بالعويل من الصراخ، جثة بلا رأس في السراي الحكومي، فالجثة لمن، والرأس أين هو، ومن هو القاتل، أحداث تتدافع لتخلق جواً مشحوناً بالترقب لا يتيح للقارئ الوقوف عند أي حرف لمتابعة مشاهد تلك الجريمة في السراي الحكومي. رواية تدور حوادثها في أحد مؤسسات الدولة الهامة، والراوي يتناول تلك الأحداث بتطوراتها ببراعة المخبر والمفتش والطبيب الشرعي والإنسان قبلاً وكل شيء، بكل ضعفه وقوته، دهائه وسذاجته، رواية تجمع في مناخاتها عمق المعالجة، وسلاسة السرد، وبراعة الأسلوب الروائي.
