-وهو معجم لأنه ذيل بقاموس عن عوامل الإعراب، مرتب على حروف الهجاء، وعوامل الإعراب ذات شأن هام لدارس النحو ومدرسه.
-وهو كتاب لأنه عالج مباحث النحو العربي من خلال توزيعها على ثلاثة أقسام كبرى سماها كتباً، تناولت: تصريف الأفعال، وتصريف الأسماء، وقواعد النحو.
-وكل كتاب من هذه الكتب تفرع بدوره إلى أقسام، والأقسام إلى أبحاث، والأبحاث إلى مطالب... مما أسهم في تبسيط الدروس وتسهيل تناولها، وتقريب مأخذها، في هندسة متدرجة متكاملة للنحو العربي.
ولأهمية عولت العديد من الكتب المدرسية عليه، وغرفت من معينه من دون أن تعترف بفضله. فاجتزأت منه فشوهت بينما حافظ "بحث المطالب" على قواعد القواعد، وتوسل تيسير النحو دون الإخلال بشمول الرؤية.
