تعاهد أبطال هذه القصة من الحيوانات على المشاركة في زرع كيس من الشعير ليكون طعاماً لهم في فصل الشتاء ولكن واحداً منهم نقض العهد وأكل الشعير بمفرده. فمن هو المتهم؟ هل هو الديك الذي عمل بنشاط وهمة لإتمام الحرث، أم هي الحمامة البيضاء الجميلة التي لا تعرف طريقاً للخيانة؟ أم هو الحمار الذي يتخذ من الشعير غذاءه المفضل؟ أم هي البطة المسكينة التي تعمل طوال النهار دون ملل أو تعب؟ أحداث هذه القصة مثيرة وابطالها حيوانات أليفة، أما الهدف الذي ابتغاه الكاتب منها هو تبين أن روح الجماعة يجب أن تسود في كل عمل جماعي وأن انخراط الفرد في عمل جماعي يقتضي الأمانة أولاً والوفاء.
