إن أعظم العلوم مقداراً، وأرفعها شرفاً ومناراً، علم التفسير الذي هو رئيس العلوم الدينية ورأسها، ومبنى قواعد الشرع وأساسها، لا يليق لتعاطيه والتصدي للتكلم فيه، إلا من برع في العلوم الدينية كلها أصولها وفروعها، وفاق في الصناعات العربية، والفنون الأدبية بأنواعها. وفي هذا الفن صنف البيضاوي تفسيره هذا، وضمّنه صفوة ما بلغه من عظماء الصحابة وعلماء التابعين، ومن دونهم من السلف الصالحين، وضمّنه الكثير من النكت البارعة، واللطائف الرائعة، استنبطها هو ومن قبله من أفاضل المتأخرين، وأماثل المحققين، معرباً عن وجوه القراءات المَعْزيّة إلى الأئمة الثمانية المشهورين، والشواذ المروية عن القرّاء المعتبرين، مفتتحاً تفسيره بأم القرآن "سورة الفاتحة" مبيناً سبب التسمية ومفصلاً في ذلك أدق تفصيل لينتقل من ثم لتفسير آياتها، معتمداً في ذلك على البيانات اللغوية، وعلى ما جاء عند المدارس اللغوية، مستشهداً على ما ساقه تارة بأقوال علماء اللغة وتارة ببعض الأبيات الشعرية التي إليها يرجع في الأمور البلاغية والنحوية دون أن يغفل عما جاء في القراءات الثانية. وهذا هو منهج المفسر في تفسير لسور وآيات القرآن الكريم في هذا التفسير الذي يعدّ، إلى جانب كونه تفسيراً، من المراجع اللغوية الهامة في أمور النحو والصرف. والدلالات اللغوية والقراءات الثانية.
