في هذا الكتاب يقدم الدكتور مصعب الهادي بابكر دراسة مقارنة في القوانين السودانية والهندية والإنجليزية، فيعرض للمواد القانونية لكل دولة مع تماثلها واختلافها، والقوانين التي تجيز أو تحد من استعمال هذا الحق.
ولمزيد من المعرفة في هذا القانون، تم للمؤلف معالجة القوانين الواردة في البلدان الثلاثة الآنفة الذكر في تسعة محاور جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: 1- نطاق الحق، 2- الأذى غير اللازم والقوة غير اللازمة، 3- التناسب بين قوة الرد والفعل المراد دفعه، 4- هل يخضع تقدير مدى القوة المسموح بها لمعيار شخصي أم موضوعي، 5- الرجوع إلى حماية السلطة العامة، 6- حماية الموظفين العموميين، 7- إمتداد حق الدفاع الشرعي لتسبيب القتل، 8- تسبيب الأذى للغير، و9- عبء الإثبات.
