أشار ابن الجوزي في مقدمة كتابه إلى تعريف الوجوه والنظائر فقال: إن معنى الوجوه والنظائر أن تكون الكلمة الواحدة ذكرت في مواضع من القرآن على لفظ واحد وحركة واحدة، وأريد بكل مكان معنى غير الآخر، فلفظ كل كلمة ذكرت في موضع نظير للفظ الكلمة المذكورة في الموضع الآخر، وتفسير كل كلمة بمعنى غير معنى الآخر هو الوجوه فإذن النظائر اسم للألفاظ، والوجوه اسم للمعاني. والهدف الذي ابتغاه المؤلف من كتابه هو أن يعرف السامع لهذه النظائر أن معانيها تختلف وأنه ليس المراد بهذه ما أريد بالأخرى.
وكتاب ابن الجوزي الذي بين أيدينا والذي عرف باسم "نزعة الأعين النواظر في علم الوجوه والنظائر" وهو مختصر جمع فيه المؤلف معاني مفردات القرآن على ترتيب الحروف وقد قسمه إلى ستة وخمسون باباً انتخب المحقق فيه مجموعة من الوجوه ودعمها بالتفاسير المنقولة، فذكر من الكلمات اللغوية في اشتقاق الكلمة وما يتفرع منها وما يتعلق بها ويواتيها، فجاء الكتاب مُلقحٌ للإفهام ومُنبّه على أصول الكلام.
