يحاور أبو الحسن الأشعري في هذا الكتاب، المعتزلة جداراً هادئاً يفند فيه أفكارهم ويحض نظرياتهم، ويعرّيها من منهجيتها، ومصداقيتها، لذا يظهر المعتزلة في هذا الكتاب وكأنهم بحاجة إلى إعادة النظر في أفكارهم، ومبادئهم، ونظرياتهم، وقد امتاز الأشعري في كتابه هذا بأسلوبه الفلسفي الجزلي، وبتسلسله المنطقي، وبقوة حجته، وهو يقع في عشرة أبواب تتناول في الباب الأول الكلام في وجود الصانع وصفاته، والباب الثاني الكلام في القرآن والإرادة، والباب الثالث في الإرادة وأنها تعم سائر المحدثات، والباب الرابع الكلام في الرؤية، والباب الخامس الكلام في القدر، والباب السادس الكلام في الاستطاعة، والباب السابع الكلام في التعديل والتجوير، والباب الثامن الكلام في الإيمان، والباب التاسع الكلام في الخاص والعام، والوعد والوعيد، والباب العاشر الكلام في الإمامة، وقد ختم الكتاب برسالة في استحسان الخوض في علم الكلام وإسناد نقله المتن، وقول منكري البحث، والنظر في أصول الدين، وأورد في آخره إجابات ردّ فيها على منكري البحث، والنظر في أصول الدين.
