هذا الكتاب هو نتاج تجربة شارل رزق في الحياة السياسية اللبنانية. وقد عايش مرحلة مؤلمة منها انجرف فيها لبنان في الدوامة الفلسطينية وأُخضع للوصاية السورية ابتداءً من النصف بالثاني من سبعينات القرن الماضي. وهو يعيش اليوم تداعيات التفكك السوري بعد انفجار الثورة على النظام الذي أسّسه حافظ الأسد منذ أكثر من أربعين عاماً.
ليس شارل رزق في صدد كتابة مذكراته، وإذا ما ذكر نفسه في المقدمة فإنما بغية عرض الظروف التي جعلته شاهداً يتوخى المصداقية في شهادته. وما يطمح إليه، بمعزلٍ عن شهادته، هو أن يحلل مآل التجربة البنانية التي باءت بالفشل. وهو فشلٌ ذريع إذا ما قيس بالدور التاريخي الكبير الذي كُتب للبنان عبر تنوّعه الطائفي، والذي يتمثل في بناء مواطنة توفّق بين احترام الخصوصيات المذهبية وتتجاوزها إلى الولاء للوطن الواحد، لتشكل نموذجاً في العالم العربي.
