في الليلة التي طُمن فيها الخليفة الراشد عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه، بخنجر مولى المغيرة ابن شعبة، فيروز الفارسي النجار، وضعت بمكة المكرمة، فيما ذكره الرواة، امرأة من حمير، يقال أنها سبيّه، لصحابي قرشي كريم من آل مخزوم، طفلاً سّمي بإسم الخليفة المقتول وكنيّ بكنيته: هو عمر أبو الخطاب ابن عبد الله بن أبي ربيعي المخزومي.
ونشأ هذا القرشي الصغير، وشبَّ، فإذا به شاعر قريش الذي لا ينازع، لا بل، شاعر الحجاز في عصره في الغزل، فحمل لواء الشعر الغزلي، ونشره ينشد الحبّ والجمال...
في هذا الكتاب يحيط الدكتور جبرائيل جبور بعصر المشاعر عمر بن أبي ربيعة، في محاولة لتبيان المشخصات التي تميز هذا العصر من العصور الأخرى (القرن الثاني للهجرة) فدرس حياة اهل ذلك الجيل من نواحٍ شتى سياسية، أي ما له علاقة بإبن أبي ربيعة، ورهطه والجماعة التي كانوا يشايعون، ثم الإقتصادية من تجارة وزراعة، لا سيما فيما يتعلق بوطن الشاعر (الحجاز)، وإجتماعية وخاصة بعد فتحهم بلاد فارس والروم، وإحتلالهم مصر وشمالي أفريقيا، وبعد إحتكاكهم بهذه الأمم التي غلبوها، فتمتعوا بأموال وسبايا هذه الأقطار ورقيقها، وجواريها ومعازفها، ولهوها.
وأما الحياتان الدينية والعلمية، ففيها بعض ظواهر الحركات الدينية وتدريس للقرآن الكريم وتدوينه، كما هو مشهور في زمن عثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنه، كذلك انتشرت القراءة والكتابة وصارت وسيلة للتراسل فيما بين الكثيرين من أبناء ذلك الجيل، أما الحركة العلمية البحتة من طب وفلسفة ومنطق وكيمياء فكانت معدومة في الحجاز، وبعض أفراد قلائل في دمشق، وكان في العراق حركة لوضع شيء من علم النحو.
وأما الحركة الدينية في الحجاز فكانت مزدهرة حيث تفسير نصوص القرآن الكريم والتثبت من الحديث وإستنباط الأحكام من القرآن الكريم وغيرها مما يخص التشريع.
