لقد خطر لي منذ أمد مديد أن أصنف معجماً إنجليزياً عربياً وجيزاً ومحتويا أكثر الألفاظ الإنجليزية شيوعاً منذ الحرب العالمية الثانية، وذلك لندرة أمثاله في أيدي التلاميذ والطلاب بمدارسنا الثانوية وجامعاتنا، ولأن الموجود في متناولهم لا يمثل الإنجليزية العصرية بوصفها لغة تعامل دولية.
لذلك وضعت هذا الهدف نصب عيني عندما شرعت في تصنيف معجمي هذا ليكون بمثابة دليل للغة الإنجليزية العصرية في مجالاتها العملية والأدبية والعلمية والفنية.
ولقد تجنب في الترجمة الغريب والحواشي من الألفاظ، كما إنني اقتصرت في ترجمة المدخل الإنجليزي الواحد على ذكر المشهور من معانيه المختلفة. ورأيت أحياناً أن أجمع بين الفصيح والبليغ من المفردات والعبارات العربية وبين العامي المصري منها متى كان دلالة على المعنى المقصود.
وكان اعتمادي في تصنيف هذا المعجم على نشره مجمع اللغة العربية بالقاهرة "المعجم الوسيط" وما ظهر من أجزاء المعجم الكبير، وغيرهما من المعاجم المتخصصة. كما رجعت في ذلك أيضاً إلى أوثق المعاجم المتخصصة في العلوم والفنون التي أخرجتها مجامع اللغة العربية بدمشق وبغداد وعمان. ولم يفتني أن استخدم الإحالات بين المداخل الإنجليزية حتى أربط كل مدخل بجميع ما يتصل به، كما لم اغفل عن وضع المفردات أحياناً في عبارات إنجليزية مترجمة إلى مقابلاتها العربية لتعين على فهم معناها وترشد إلى طريقة استعمالها.
وبرغم أن اللغة الإنجليزية في الجزء البريطانية هي الأساس في وضع هذا المعجم، فإنني لم أنس أن أشير إلى الإنجليزية الأمريكية مع رمزي لها بالحروف U.S.A.
