الواسطة هي الشيء الذي يقع بين أمرين أما في اصطلاح أهل السنة والجماعة فإنها ترادف الوسيلة والشفاعة وبمعنى آخر هي الوسائل أو الأسباب الشرعية المقربة إلى الله والواردة في الكتاب والسنة وتطلق على أمرين: واسطة من الحق إلى الخلق، وهي الرسالة، وواسطة من الخلق وهي العبادة. ولكنها عند أهل الأهواء والبدع ليست مضبوطة بضابط معين وقد تميز منهج أهل السنة والجماعة في فهم الوساطة بالتقيد بالكتاب والسنة ولأن موضوع الواسطة من أهم الموضوعات التي تبنى عليها مسائل الاعتقاد وتترتب عليها الكثير من النتائج.
جاءت هذه الرسالة لتناول هذا الموضوع من جوانبه المتعددة، وقد جاءت الرسالة مشتملة على مقدمة وتمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة فبين في المقدمة مكانة الموضوع وأهميته وعرف بالواسطة وميز بين معنى الواسطة عند أهل السنة وبين معناها عند أهل الأهواء والبدع. أما الباب الأول فشرح فيه معنى الواسطة بين الله وخلقه عند أهل السنة والجماعة. وعرض في الباب الثاني لموضوع الواسطة بين الله وخلقه عند أهل الأهواء. وبيان خروجهم فيه عن دائرة الكتاب والسنة. أما الباب الثالث فعرض فيه لأثر الواسطة الشرعية والبدعته في العقيدة.
