غاية هذا الكتاب عرض الأساليب النثرية عرضاً يبين تطورها منذ ظهور الإسلام إلى الوقت الحاضر، حيث أفرد فيه لنثر صدر الإسلام قسماً خاصاً، صرفت فيه العناية إلى تحقيق مروياته، والنظر في نصوصه. هو يشكل بضعة فصول ويمتد إلى زمن عبد الحميد الكاتب. وقد قاد البحث فيه إلى النظر في الأسلوب النثري عند منبثق الإسلام وكيف يظهر في القرآن والحديث وكلام أهل الصدر الأول، وسلك في كل ذلك طريقاً يجمع بين صراحة التحقيق والحذر من التطرف.
وبعد الفراغ من نثر الصدر الأول تم إلقاء نظرة على الأساليب الإنشائية من أيام عبد الحميد إلى الوقت الحاضر، فإذا هي تجري في ثلاثة أساليب رئيسية: 1-الأسلوب المتوازن (أي المزدوج غير المسجع) -ويدخل فيه ترسل عبد الحميد والجاحظ وإضرابهما. 2-الأسلوب المسجع -ويتناول الرسائل الديوانية والأدبية والمقامات وما إلى ذلك. 3-الأسلوب المطلق -وهو النثر السائد في الكتب العلمية والتاريخية والاجتماعية قديماً، وأسلوب الإنشاء العام في العصر الحديث.
وقد تناول الكتاب هذا الأسلوبين الأولين وحاول أن يتابع تطور كل منهما مع الزمان وقارن ذلك بدراسات مسهبة لنخبة من كبار المنشئين المجمع على إمامتهم في الفروع المختلفة، ولم يقرر قضية أو يعرض لمنحى إلا دعم الكلام فيهما بكثير من النصوص، فجاء الكتاب معرضاً تاريخياً للنثر العربي، ومرجعاً لكثير مما لا يوجد إلا مبعثراً في تضاعيف الكتب القديمة.
