الرواية تسبر في غور عالم التوحّد، ذلك المرض الذي يصيب الإنسان فيعزله عن مجرى الحياة العادية ويجعل منه كياناً لا يتوافق سلوكه مع نمط الحياة السائد. وهي عبارة عن قصة حقيقية تسرد وقائع رحلة، في قالب مغامرة، يقوم بها رجل لا يذعن لِنصْح الأطباء، برفقة ابنه المصاب بمرض التوحّد. يتتبّع الكتاب سلوك الابن وانطباعاته مع ما يواجه من تغيرات في حياته اليومية، وردود فعل الناس الذين يحيطون به. وفي الوقت ذاته، يروي الكتاب الصعوبات التي يجابهها الأب، الذي لا يكلّ ولا يدّخر جهداً في متابعة ابنه والحرص على سلامته من جهة، والبحث الدؤوب عن بارقة أمل يتشبّث بها لتحسين حالته من جهة أخرى. لا يذهب الكتاب إلى بحث أسباب المرض ولا يدّعي تقديم حلول ناجعة، بل يقتفي آثار الرجلين في الأراضي الأمريكية، فينقل جمال الطبيعة الخلابة ويلقي الضوء على عادات مختلف المجتمعات، مختلساً النظر إلى الطقوس والشعائر السائدة، ومتعمقاً في خلجات الأب وهواجسه، وبالمثل ابنه، التواقين إلى حدوث معجزة.
