حظيت قضية التذكير والتأنيث باهتمام الكثيرين من لغويي العرب، فألفوا كتباً مستقلة فيها كالفراء (ت207هـ)، وأبي عبيدة بن سلام (ت 223هـ)، وأبي حاتم السجستاني (ت255هـ)، والمبرد (ت285هـ)، والزجاج (ت311هـ)، وابن الأنباري (ت328هـ) وابن خالويه (ت370هـ)، وابن جني (ت392هـ) وغيرهم.
ولقد كانت العناية بجمع المؤنثات السماعية مردها لأنها لم تدخل تحت ضوابط معينة، ,أن المعول عليه فيها هو السماع فقط. وممن فعلوا ذلك ابن سيده (ت398هـ) في المخصص، وابن الحاجب (ت646هـ) في الشافية، ثم جلال الدين السيوطي (ت911هـ) في المزهر.
على أن ابن الحاجب لم يستوف جميع المؤنثات السماعية، كما أن منظومته التي دونها في هذا الإطار تخلو من الشرح والإيضاح، وأن الباحث عن كلمة يحتاج لقراءة المنظومة كاملة، زد على ذلك أن ابن الحاجب قد وقف فيما ضمن مجموعته من الأسماء حدود عصره، بل إنه لم يستوف ما كان معروفاً، وما وجدته في المعجمات القديمة. وكذا الحال بالنسبة لموضوع المذكر والمؤنث في الكتب القديمة، فإن كثيراً مما ذكر أصبح ذا قيمة تاريخية، ولم يعد كتاب هذا العصر أو أبناء اللغة يستعملون كثيراً مما حوت الكتب التي أشرت إليها في تراث المذكر والمؤنث.
لذلك رأي "حامد صادق قنيبي" أنه لمن المفيد إعادة شرحها بأسلوب يناسب العصر، مضيفاً إليها الكثير من الألفاظ المولدة والمعربة، وقد حرص أن يدعم شروحه بالاستشهاد ما وجدت ضرورة لذلك.
ولقد ضبط مواد المعجم بالشكل والوصف ثم اتبع ذلك بالشرح اللغوي، وجعلت الآيات الكريمة بين قوسين مزهرين، وتعددت مراجعه فشملت معاجم اللغة، وخاصة معجم لسان العرب لابن منظور، وكتب اللغة، وفقه اللغة، والنحو والصرف، وأومأ إلى ذلك كما تتطلب مقتضيات البحث.
أما بالنسبة للألفاظ الدخيلة والمولدة والمعربة، فلقد رجع إلى كل ما له صلة بالموضوع، ولقد كشف عن مصادري لهذا الجانب من الدراسة لدى تمهيده لعرض قائمة الألفاظ الدخيلة والمولدة.
