العرب كغيرهم من الأمم، عرفوا فن القصة.وذهبوا فيها مذاهب شتى، لكنهم لم يعرفوا التقنية القصصية إذ إعتبروا القصة فناً من فنون النثر التي كانت تشمل لديهم الوصايا والمقامات والرسائل المتبادلة، إذ أنفن القصة بمفهومهالحديث فن غربي المنشأ عرفه العرب مع بداية النهضة وتطور شيئاً فشيئاً.
وحاكوا الغربيين في بناء القصة فعنوا ببناء الشخصيات وتطورها واهتموا بطبيعة الزمن ونموه وتحولاته. لا يعني ذلك إن العرب لم يعرفوا فن القصة مطلقاً، فتراثهم حافل بالقصص المروية التي تناقلتها الرواة ومثال ذلك قصص ألف ليلة وليلة، سيرة الزير سالم، وسيرة عنتر، وكليلة ودمنة وغيرها. وبعض هذه القصص منقول عن الفارسية أو الهندية.
والأمثلة التي تظهر قدرة العرب ومعرفتهم بالقصص كثيرة، يقدم هذا الكتاب بعضاً منها إختارتها المؤلفة لتأكيد هذا المنحى. وهذه القصص مختارة من عدد من الكتب، أهمها المستطرف من كل فن مستظرف، وتاريخ الحلفاء، وأخبار النساء، وكليلة ودمنة، وكتاب الأغاني، ومقامات الحريري، والرسالة القشيرية، ومروج الذهب ومعادن الجوهر، وغيرها من الكتب.
