يتناول محمد جلوب فرحات بحثاً ابستمولوجياً لتواريخ اليعقوبي وابن الأثير. ويعود اختياره لليعقوبي وابن الأثير في هذا البحث إلى أمرين: أن اليعقوبي ونسقه التاريخي يشكلان محاولة أولى لإرساء قواعد مدرسة تاريخية ومعروفة في البحث، وأن ابن الأثير ونسقه التاريخي يتابعان بالمنهجية والموجهات، القواعد التي ركزها الطبري للمدرسة التاريخية المقابلة لمدرسة اليعقوبي. وقد تناول هذا البحث من خلال نموذجين من النصوص: نموذج معبر عن النسق التاريخي لدى اليعقوبي، مرتكزات ونهجاً، والآخر النموذج المعبر عن النسق التاريخي لدى ابن الأثير، مرتكزات ونهجاً. وغرض الباحث في هذا التحليل الابستيمولوجي هو الكشف عن الذهنية المعرفية عند أصحاب النصوص، والتعرف على أدواتهم المعرفية في الكتابة، وتحديد المؤثرات المعرفية التي أجبرتهم على اختيار هذه المرتكزات وهذا النهج دون غيره.
