في حوار مع الطيب صالح اشترك فيه طلبة قسم اللغة الإنجليزية وآدابها بالجامعة الأردنية صرح الطيب ولأول مرة منذ ظهور موسم الهجرة إلى الشمال أن جين موريس فتاة بريطانية قابلها عرضاً في متحف الفنون بلندن عندما كان في زيارة لمعرض الفن الإنطباعي.
دعا الطيب الفتاة لتناول الشاي معه بعد زيارة المعرض ودار بينهما حديث طويل، يقول الطيب كنت في ذلك الحين شاباً يافعاً في أول عهدي بحياة الغرب والغربة، لم أر حين موريس بعد ذلك.
ولا يعني هذا أنه أصبح بإستطاعتنا التعرف على ضالتنا في الرواية، فالدلالة التي يثيرها هذا الإعتراف أهم بكثير من الإعتراف نفسه، والذي سمع الطيب وهو يقدم هذا الإعتراف طوعاً يستشف من نغمة صوته الدافئ الذي كان يجسد الحنين إلى تلك المناسبة يدرك أن اللقاء مع جين موريس كان لقاء شوق لا علاقة مباشرة له بما تفرع عنه من صورة اكتسبت ألواناً متعددة، تشابك فيها الخير والشر، الحب والكره، الماضي والحاضر، وتعمق الصراع فيها بين الخاص والعام عمق الحياة نفسها وشموليتها العريقة.
وما يمكننا أن نستدل عليه من هذا الإعتراف هو أن مناسبة بسيطة كهذه يمكن أن تتحول على يد الفنان إلى عمل خالد عندما يعانقه شوق الخلود وينطلق به بعد ذلك عبر القيود وخلف الحدود.
