يقول العلاّمة ابن خلدون في مقدمته: "أما بعدْ؛ فإن فنَّ التاريخ من الفنون التي تتداولُهُ الأممُ والأجيال، وتُشدُّ إليه الركائب والرِّحال، وتسمو إلى معرفته السُّوقةُ والأغفال، وتتنافس فيه الملوك والأفيال، وتتساوى في فهمه العلماء والجهال؛ إذ هو في ظاهره لا يزيد على أخبار عن الأيام والدول، والسوابق من القرون الأوّل، تنمو فيه الأقوال، وتُضرب فيه الأمثال، وتُطْرفُ بها الأندية إذا غصَّها الإحتفال، وتؤدي لنا شأن الخليقة كيف تقلبت بها الأحوال، واتسع للدول فيها النطاق والمجال، وعمّروا الأرض حتى نادى بهم الإرتحال، وحان منهم الزوال؛ وفي باطنه نظرٌ وتحقيق، وتعليل للكائنات ومبادئها دقيق، وعلم بكيفيات الوقائع وأسبابها عميق، فهو لذلك أصيل في الحكمة عريق، وجدير بأن يُعدِّ في علومها وخليق".
ولا شك أن كلمة ابن خلدون هذه تعبّر ادق تعبير عن معنى علم التاريخ، وتعرِّفه تعريفاً مفصَّلاً يقترب من معظم التعريفات المعاصرة.
وإذا كان علم التاريخ هو هكذا كما عَرَّفه ابن خلدون، فلا شك أن عامَّة الناس وخاصَّتَهم أكثر حاجةً إلى معرفته من معظم العلوم الأخرى، لذا وإنطلاقاً من هذا المبدأ نضع بين يدي القارئ العربي الكريم هذه السلسلة عن أعلام الفكر التاريخي العربي والإسلامي آملين أن نحقق الهدف المنشود من إصدارها.
