"اكتأب وجه سعدية بالتدريج، ازداد حلكة وعتمة، وكلما ابتعد حاسم عنها تشتد صلابة وحكمة، خاف بدوره، الاقتراب منها، لئلا تعلق به، جدياً، وتحاشت الاحتكاك به لئلا تتعرى. صارا متباغضين عن بعد، جزعين، متوترين بضغينة الدهاة كرهاً. باتت تهرب من "سلمان" المكوي، أيضاً كجرادة من قصب بعد أن رأت تعلق حاسم الشديدية. خافت دواخلها منه وصارت تبتعد قدر الإمكان عن المرور من أمام دكانه. خاطب الهواء يوماً أثناء مرورها به، اضطراراً غازلها لكي يأخذ حصته بدوره. ومتى يا أبا العبابة، ما هذا الصدود عني!" صور وذكريات يأتي بعضها بأثر بعض تسطر قصصاً من الحياة الداخلية في "بيت الطالبات" حيث يعيش مختلف الطبقات من البنات والنساء.
تبدأ إذاعة بغداد، دون وقار، بكيل الشتائم والسباب لهم، يصبح الوطني، يوم أمس، خائناً من الدرجة الأولى، والعكس بالعكس... كان أول الراكضين للتمتع بمشاهدة المصلوبين على المشانق في الساحات العامة "كأم الطبول" وساحة الحرية وغيرها... مفهوم العدالة شيء غامض عنده، إنها قضية لا تختلف عن حالة الرحمة، لا وجود لها في تجربته الحياتية الصعبة. صار الظلم هو السائد والمقياس للعيش دون أي تذمر أو احتجاج منه أو من جماعته منذ قرون...".
