إن المنطلق الأساسي لهذا الكتاب هو الحرص على اللغة العربية الأم وعلى دورها الأساسي في حياة الناطقين بها كأساس من أسس الهوية والانتماء وكأداة فضلى لتحصيل العلم والمعرفة. فالكتاب ليس بحثاً في الصراع بين اللغة العربية واللغات الأجنبية بقدر ما هو بحث في الدور التاريخى والمستقبلي للغة العربية، واستكشاف لمجالات استعمالاتها وتفتيش عن أسباب منافستها من قبل اللغات الأجنبية على دور طبيعي لها وعلى وظائف هي من صلب واقعها كلفة أم.
والسبب في هذا التركيز على دراسة دور اللغة العربية في التعليم هو القناعة بأن حاضر اللغة العربية ومصيرها المستقبلي يرتبط ارتباطاً عضوياً بالتعليم لأن عملية تقوية وتنشيط وتجديد حيوية اللغة تركيباً ودلالة ومعنى إنما تبدأ في المدرسة ومنها تنتشر إلى المجتمع الأكبر بكل مرافقه ووسائل التعبير فيه.
يقع هذا الكتاب في ثلاثة محاور تعطي وجهاً مختلفة لدور اللغة في التعليم. يتعرض المحور الأول لحال اللغة العربية وما طرأ عليها من تغييرات وتبدلات نتيجة عوامل مختلفة كالتطور الطبيعي والاحتكاك مع اللغات الأخرى والدور الذي تشغله في مجتمعاتها. أما المحور الثاني فيركز على دور لغة التعليم في استيعاب المواد والمفاهيم العلمية، ويركز المحور الثالث على علاقة اللغة بالعربية والتعليم ومواقف اللبنانيين واتجاهاتهم نحو اللغات.
