في روايته "شجرة لها مليون جذع" يرصد الكاتب عبد الله العطاس البعد النفسي للعلاقة التي تجمع الطفل بأمه في السنوات الأولى من عمره، ففي ظلّ غياب (الأب) للعمل خارج حدود الوطن، وترك بطل الرواية لإبنته في عمر شهرين ترعرعت الطفلة في حصن أمها التي أغدقت عليها من عواطف الأمومة والدلال والحنان الكثير جداً، فنشأت بسبب ذلك متعلقة بها لا ترى غيرها في هذا الكون، حتى أن رجوع (الأب) إلى بلده بدا شيئاً لا يغيبها "أخذت تبتعد عني لا تدعني ألمسها وهي تحضن أمها الذي كانت رفيقتها طوال تلك المدة لا ترى غيرها ولا تكلم سواها...".
لم يعرف (الأب) سّر هذه العلاقة بين الأم وابنتها وشيئاً فشيئاً بدأت الصورة تنجلي فقد عرف ما معنى أن تكون المرأة (أم)... تتوالى الأيام وتحمل زوجته بالطفل الثاني، وحان وقت الولادة، فكانت الولادة متعسرة واحتاجت إلى عملية، والصغيرة لا تتوقف عن البكاء، وبعد الولادة تم إخبار (الأب) بأن الطفل في أحسن حال، أما (الأم) فقد حصلت لها مضاعفات وتم نقلها إلى غرفة العناية المركزة...
وكان وقع الخبر كالصاعقة عندما أخبر الدكتور المسؤول بأن عليهم إيقاف الأجهزة التي تمدها بالحياة وطلب من (الأب) و(الطفلة) توديعها لآخر مرة... وعند وقوفهم قرب الباب مغادرين أوقفهم صوت الجهاز بزنينه المتقطع فعادوا مسرعين... فقد حلت معجزة بأمر الله تعالى وأخذ قلب (الأم) يتحرك... وحده الحب يبعث الحياة من جديد...
