يتحدث المصنف أبي جعفر بن إسماعيل النحاس في هذا الكتاب عن صناعة الكُتاب والكتاب وأحواله. وعن الكتابة التي عدها فرع من فروع الدين. ويقول في الكُتاب "أنتم معاشر الكتاب ذوو الأخطار من خيار الخيار، على أيديكم مجاري النعم والنقم، ليس فوقكم رغبة لذي مطلب، فأفضلكم الفاضل، وخيركم الخير، تشهدون ما غاب الناس عنه، خيركم منتظر، وشركم مخوف." هكذا كانت نظرة المصنف إلى الكُتاب ومنه انطلق إلى الحديث في مسألة الكتابة واشتقاقاتها في الخط والهجاء، في اصطلاحات الكتابة، في النحو، في البلاغة، في الفهاهة، في الخطابة، في فضل الكتابة.
أما المواضيع التي اختصت بالكتاب فتحدث فيها عن أشياء يخلط فيها الكُتاب، وأشياء يحتاج إليها الكاتب. هذا وقد جاءت هذه المخطوطة محققة، وتجلى عمل المحقق في: تخريج الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث الشريفة وأبيات الشعر: تحديد النص ومقابلته بما ورد في المصادر المختلفة، ضبط المخطوطة ضبطاً يوضح المعاني ويزيل الغموض.
